What is a second?
The second is the base unit of time in the International System of Units (SI). Since 1967 it has been defined by the vibration of a caesium-133 atom — exactly 9,192,631,770 cycles — which is why atomic clocks keep time to the second so precisely. Every other time unit on this page is built up from seconds.
Because the second is an exact physical constant, conversions from seconds to minutes, hours, days, and weeks are exact. Only conversions to months and years carry an average, since calendar months and leap years vary in length.

Real-world examples
One day is exactly 86,400 seconds. Web servers measure uptime in seconds, so "five nines" availability (99.999%) allows less than 0.86 seconds of downtime per day — a strict standard for critical infrastructure.
Unix timestamps count the number of seconds elapsed since January 1, 1970. Programmers convert those raw seconds into minutes, hours, and days to display human-readable dates and durations.
A human life of about 73 years is roughly 2.3 billion seconds. Putting a lifetime in seconds is a common way to illustrate how finite — and how plentiful — our time really is.
Seconds conversion FAQ
How many seconds are in a minute, hour, and day?
A minute is 60 seconds, an hour is 3,600 seconds, and a day is 86,400 seconds. A week is 604,800 seconds.
Why do computers count time in seconds?
Seconds are unambiguous and never vary in length, unlike months or years. Systems store a single integer count of seconds (a Unix timestamp) and convert to calendar units only when displaying dates to people.
Are seconds-to-year conversions exact?
No. Seconds, minutes, hours, days, and weeks convert exactly, but a year averages 365.25 days (31,557,600 seconds) to account for leap years, and a month averages 30.44 days.
